Common Home Network Security Mistakes
It’s impossible to imagine modern life without our home networks. They connect everything from gaming consoles and smart speakers to laptops and phones, allowing us to work, shop, or entertain ourselves at all times. And, it’s only reasonable that you want to make sure that something you rely on so heavily is also as secure as can be.

Not Changing the Router’s Default Password

Older standards like WEP and WPA-TKIP are compromised and can be exploited to gain network access.
How to avoid: Use WPA3 if at all possible, or at least WPA2-AES. Supporting older hardware’s online capabilities isn’t worth the considerable risk.
Using Public Wi-Fi Without Protection
It’s possible to endanger your home network from outside, even if the network itself is protected. Public Wi-Fi is a well-known security risk, as fake hotspots and man-in-the-middle attacks can monitor your activity, intercept traffic, or redirect you to malicious websites. Malware that infects one device this way may spread to others once it’s connected to your home network again.
How to avoid: Never connect to public Wi-Fi and other unsafe networks. If you have to, do so with a VPN. Regardless of the type of VPN you choose — be it a mobile, personal, or browser — they create an encrypted tunnel to securely route all traffic. This prevents snooping and redirects while safeguarding your privacy.
Reusing Passwords
It’s dangerous yet disconcertingly common for people to use the same or similar passwords for everything from their email and streaming accounts to router access. This puts all related accounts at risk, since a single set of login details leaked in a data breach exposes them all.
How to avoid: Every account, no matter how insignificant, needs to have a unique and complex password. The easiest way to ensure this is by using the best password manager available, since they can generate as many complex passwords as needed. Password managers store credentials in encrypted vaults while also making them easy to share and sync.
Leaving Remote Management Enabled
Remote management is a feature that lets users interact with admin pages and configure routers using any internet connection. Publicly available router access makes it subject to constant login attempts, even if you change the default password.
How to avoid: Disable remote management entirely.
Connecting All Devices to One Network
Users regularly connect PCs, phones, smart TVs, and IoT devices to the same network. This is risky because smart devices have far fewer protections and are easier to hack. Once attackers gain control of them, they can move through the network laterally and access other devices, especially if their login credentials are the same.
How to avoid: Keep your primary devices on the main network while segmenting IoT devices to a separate, dedicated one. Disconnect devices you no longer use from either.
