DIY Skills That Save You Thousands: From Home Repairs to Car Maintenance

Kenneth Stevenson 3 min read

Between inflation and rising housing costs, DIY skills are more valuable than ever. The right skillset can even save you thousands of dollars on home improvement and car repair bills.

However, spotting early warning signs and knowing when to call a professional is just as crucial. Exercising good judgment is also a key money-saver.

Discover essential DIY skills for car maintenance, plumbing, sealing and caulking, drywall, and HVAC.

DIY Car Maintenance Skills

Learning a few basic car maintenance skills can save you hundreds of dollars on annual oil and filter changes.

However, you should be well-versed in these skills and follow safety protocols, like using jack stands and ramps. Always work on flat, level ground, ensuring the parking brake is on. You may safely run the engine for 3 to 5 minutes to warm the oil before draining, but wait up to 15 minutes after turning off the ignition to avoid burns.

DIY oil changes can save you $100 per change. Similarly, you can replace your car’s cabin air filters, sparing you another $100 at the dealership. The air filters are located behind your glovebox and can be quickly removed for replacement.

Mechanical upkeep requires more involved DIY skills, but the following tasks are considered quite manageable:

  • Replacing brake pads
  • Cleaning the battery terminal (to prevent corrosion)
  • Checking fluid levels

Regularly checking coolants, brakes, and transmission can prevent mechanical failures and those dreaded “no start” scenarios.

While basic maintenance like oil changes and brake pad replacement can save money, modern vehicles rely heavily on complex electrical systems, sensors, and onboard diagnostics. A small mistake or incorrect diagnosis can quickly lead to expensive repairs or even safety issues.

For those who find themselves enjoying hands-on work or wanting to go beyond simple fixes, gaining structured vehicle diagnostics and repair training becomes essential for safely handling modern automotive systems and avoiding costly mistakes. Professional training helps you understand engine systems, electrical components, and advanced diagnostic tools, turning a simple DIY skill into a reliable career path.

DIY Plumbing Skills

Center your DIY home maintenance skills on prevention, such as performing regular “sweeps” for warning signs.

Plumbing is a perfect example. Use a checklist to check the following items:

  • Running toilets
  • Leaky faucets
  • Loose sink top handles
  • Pipe sounds (rattling, whistling, banging, etc.)
  • Low water pressure

You can learn basic DIY plumbing skills to replace a faucet cartridge or a leaking toilet flapper. These skills alone can save you around $300 on a plumbing appointment. However, they must be executed correctly to avoid costly mistakes.

To replace a flapper, turn off the water supply valve located behind the toilet. Flush the toilet and drain the tank. Determine the right flapper size, and unclip the old flapper from the tube, installing a new flapper in its place.

Most leaks are caused by old rubber seals or loose compression fittings. Replacing these early can prevent expensive water damage bills down the line.

Additional Home Maintenance Skills

Learning how to properly seal and caulk bathtubs, showers, and window frames can prevent moisture and mold growth. Meanwhile, changing your own HVAC filters and cleaning condenser coils can significantly improve indoor air quality and HVAC functionality.

With basic drywall DIY skills, you can also patch small holes and dents in the walls, making them practically unnoticeable without the need for professional repair!

Take Charge Of Your Repairs

Having a reliable DIY skillset is an asset during times of inflation.

Create a DIY checklist, complete with quick car maintenance repairs, plumbing essentials, and home maintenance tasks. But when DIY reaches its limits, know when to call a professional.
